Pop by One of the City’s Mobile Pop-up Skate Parks
We host temporary mobile skateparks and competitions at multiple locations across the city. Using our skateparks is free and they are open to skateboarders, inline skaters and scooter users of all ages. Each park has a combination of roll-ins, fun-boxes with rails, pyramids with rails, grind-boxes, quarter pipes, wall rides, and half pipes. You can also participate in our skatepark competitions.

Catch an Outdoor Movie at Tomkins Park
Spend your Saturday on 17th Ave all summer long! From June 8th through to July 27th, we will be featuring live music, games, giveaways, and movies in Tomkins Park. Bring the whole family and enjoy the festivities!

Hunt for a Geocache
Find a treasure hunt in your own backyard, or on a day trip to the mountains. You can use a GPS location system on your mobile device, or splurge for the Geocache app to find a treasure, and leave something in its place. The paid app is well worth the cost and makes it even easier to find those hidden treasures.
Grab a Lawn Chair for Lawn Chair Theatre
Bring your lawn chair, enjoy great snacks and live entertainment for the entire family. This event is free and is open to all ages. Registration is not required. Events will take place in various locations across Calgary.

Take Part in a Pop-up Puppet Making Workshop
We are thrilled to be participating in Crescent Heights’ Stampede Breakfast with a puppet-making workshop and parade! Drop by any time between 9:00 and 11:30am to make your own simple scarf bird marionette. Decorate it with found materials – pinecone head? Or a twig beak? Join the fun and help us make some parade size birds– how big will they be?

Explore a Mobile Adventure Playground
The mobile adventure playground is not a registered program, but a playground that offers a different way to play. Onsite play ambassadors are there to inspire play and keep the playground safe, but not directly supervise the children. Parents are encouraged to stay and watch their children play and see how their imaginations soar in this new adventure space.

Take a Tour of a Fire Station
Book a tour of one of Calgary’s fire stations for your family, school group or community group and meet your local firefighters and learn about fire prevention and fire safety. Fire station tours are an opportunity to see and learn about modern firefighting equipment, including our fire trucks, and ask those questions you’ve always wanted to.

Pack a S’more Kit and Head to a Park with BBQ Pit
S’mores are better when you make them at your favourite park or playground. Find a local park with a BBQ pit, (we love Sandy Beach) and head out with a S’more kit to make memories of an evening filled with fun. We love surprising the kids with this after they’ve gotten into their pyjamas! Grab a S’more kit the next time they’re on sale, and stash it away for a moment like this!

Join us in Fish Creek Provincial Park for the 9th annual Parks Day & Creekfest on Saturday, July 20! This free family celebration of nature is a component of the Friends’ Watershed Awareness Campaign, designed to raise awareness in communities near the park about protecting our local waterways. Kids and families can have fun learning about environmental stewardship, conservation and biodiversity through educational games and activities!

Join a Street Mural Painting Party
In collaboration with the Crescent Hight Community Association, Alberta Traffic Safety and the City of Calgary, the five Paint the Pavement projects happening in Crescent Heights over June and July 2019 are a volunteer-led program that allows the neighbours to come together and create art as a free public community celebration.

Summer Nature Drop-in Program
Looking for free summer activities for the kids? Try our nature drop-in program at Ralph Klein Park. Join us for these exciting, interactive sessions where we will explore swimming, flying and crawling creatures using fun, hands-on activities. Program themes will rotate on a weekly basis.

Milky Way Nights at the Observatory
See astronomers in their natural habitat, under dark moonless skies. Late night public observing is a unique opportunity to see deep sky objects such as planetary nebula and globular clusters.

Celebrate Parks Day in Alberta
Parks Day is celebrated nation-wide on the third Saturday every July. Participating parks across Alberta host fun activities for the whole family. Enter a sandcastle-building competition, learn about bear safety, go on a scavenger hunt, enjoy a campfire or just connect with nature. Parks Day is a great opportunity for Albertans to rediscover fun and reconnect with nature.

Experience the Calgary Dragon Boat Festival
As Calgary’s premier water sport festival, the Calgary Dragon Boat Race & Festival draws +1850 competitors, +4000 spectators and an abundance of excitement and cultural experiences. Every year, the Calgary Dragon Boat Society (CDBS) organizes Dragon Boat Race & Festival at North Glenmore Park to showcase culture and dragon boat racing in a family-friendly environment.

Get out of Town: Explore Grassi Lakes
This short picturesque trail is great for families and is one of Canmore’s most popular hikes. Choose from the easy route, which takes you up a gentle incline to the spectacular turquoise lake, or the more challenging wooded trail that passes by a waterfall and offers beautiful views of Canmore and Bow Valley. Plan for about one to two hours for this 4 km (2.5 mi) hike.
Find a Free Event During Alberta Open Farm Days
Alberta Open Farm Days is about farmers and ranchers inviting their urban and rural neighbors to stop in for a visit to share stories, see demonstrations, and learn more about the farmers who grow their food. As well, some of Alberta’s most talented chefs and rural communities will be hosting a memorable series of farm to table culinary events that will be held around the province using Alberta farm products.

Take a FREE Kids Camp at the Apple Store
Kids ages 8 to 12 can expand their digital creativity through hands-on projects at Apple. Campers choose one of three tracks, then spend 90 minutes a day for three days at a local Apple Store immersed in their chosen subject.
Explore the Big Rock in Okotoks
Visible from considerable distance across the relatively flat terrain of the prairie landscape, ‘Big Rock’ is an enormous glacial erratic. The 16,500-tonne (18,200-ton) boulder transported far from its mountainous place of origin by a rockslide then by a glacial sheet of ice between 10,000 to 30,000 years ago to its present-day location just west of the Town of Okotoks.
Tour De Bowness Street Festival
Join us for some FREE FAMILY FUN at our 2019 Tour de Bowness Street Festival on Monday, August 5th! Enjoy local musicians playing toe tapping tunes on our Tim Hortons (TimWest Group) stage and bring the little ones for the 88.9 Shine FM Kids Zone. Over 80 independent artisan vendors will be showcasing their products and services along with yummy food trucks and entertaining street performers. Bow Cycle will host their annual Tour de Bowness – a series of high speed bicycle races – just west of the festival.

Spray parks operated by The City are un-guarded facilities open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Grab a picnic and pack a lunch, and plan to spend the afternoon at the Spray Park with the kids.
Meet Princesses (and Superheroes) in the Park
As a thank you for all the amazing support we receive from Calgary families, charity organizations, businesses and much more. We invite you all to come out and spend an afternoon with a bunch of characters. Best part, it’s FREE! This year we are shaking things up and trying out some new ideas. All characters will be out at Stanley Park from 1pm to 4pm. We also added Superheroes!

Each year, the Kids Bowl Free program kicks off. This fantastic nationwide is program designed to give youth a constructive way to beat the heat. Sign your kids up to bowl two FREE games every day all summer long at their local bowling alley. Various dates all summer long.

Head over to St. Patrick’s Island for an afternoon or morning or wading, it’s a free activity you can do with the kids – just bring a picnic, and you’ll have a free morning out. There’s lots to explore in the East Village, and that’s just the start!

The Calgary Fringe is bursting with activity. It’s a nine-day blitz of arts and culture, and there’s truly something for everyone. When you come down to Inglewood, give yourself at least a few hours to explore and discover everything the Calgary Fringe has to offer. Inglewood SunFest, takes place on Saturday, August 3, 2019. Sunfest is the ultimate outdoor event to wander around between shows. It features creative street performers, buskers, vendors and a pop-up artisan market, plus lots of food trucks, a pie-eating contest and great activities for the kids.
