25 Family Friendly Things to do in Calgary in February

  1. Take the kids swimming at one of the City of Calgary pools during Splash and Swim on Sundays. It’s only $2 for admission for adults and $1 for kid.
  2. Try a new hot chocolate during YYC Hot Chocolate Fest. There are 29 businesses participating all around the city.
  3. Spend a Thursday morning at Monkeyshine’s, where storytime happens at 10:30. Just show up, get comfy and listen to a story. While you’re there, you can browse the books.
  4. Visit one of Calgary’s Parks and take part in the Skate in Nature program. Enjoy some fresh air with family and friends, get toasty by the fire, and learn how local plants and animals adapt to the cold with some fun nature activities. Find the event dates, here.
  5. Get free admission to the Glenbow Museum on the first Thursday of the month. It’s a great way to warm up, check out the exhibitions and have an evening out.
  6. Check out the many events in the city going on for Family Day
  7. Ice Fishing anyone? During family fishing Weekends, no licence is required, occurs twice a year. Albertans and visitors are invited to give fishing a try on water bodies with open fishing seasons (not in national parks). Keep in mind that fishing regulations still apply.
  8. Watch the Chinese New Year Parade and have fun at the Festival, weekends until February 21, 2016. You can get the full event schedule, here.
  9.  Explore something new at the Winter Carnival at Fort Calgary. More events details can be found, here.
  10. Watch Hotel Transylvania 2 for $2.99 on February 15 as part of Cineplex Family Favourites. See the rest of the Saturday morning showings, here.
  11. Walk with the King Penguins at the Calgary Zoo as they take a trip outside of their habitat, a walkabout, every morning at 11 am.
  12. Drop by your local Ivivva store on Sunday mornings for the chance to warm up before the store opens with a free dance or movement class.
  13. Get outside and have fun with family skating, activities, hot chocolate and Fireworks in Westgate on February 6, between 5-7.
  14. Have an epic experience and feed the fish on Fridays at Bow Habitat. There are thousands of fish, and it’s only $2.
  15. Strap on a pair of Snowshoes ($7 to rent) and head out on the trails when you’ve finished feeding the fish. The interpretive wetlands are a great place to learn to Snowshoe.
  16. Join friends and other young families at the Genesis Centre for bouncy houses, parachutes, balls, toys, mats, and more! This unsupervised, parented drop-in program takes place Tuesdays and Thursdays, between 10 and noon. You had our kids at bouncy houses.
  17. Join the Pottery Barn Kids book club and stop by the store every week on Tuesdays at 11 am for Storytime. Books, activities and every time you visit five times, you get a special surprise.
  18. See a free movie, and try a new type of Candy on Saturday Afternoons. Follow along on Facebook to get the schedule.
  19. Spend your Wednesday morning indoors at the CORE, Devonian Garden. This free in drop-in nature program will highlight a different theme using games, crafts and stories. Topics will include Fancy Fish, Plant Power, Secret Lives of Lady Bugs and Shapes in Nature.
  20. Join the South Centre Mall Kids Club and get access to a free monthly playdate where kids can drop in for fun.
  21. Drop into Westbrook Mall on the second Saturday of the month for some kids fun. It’s a great way to occupy the kids indoors, for free. 
  22. Take a kids cooking class. The affordable cooking classes offered through PC Cooking School give you the option of participating with your kid, or dropping them off (for older children). Plus, they’re an inexpensive way to get your kid excited about being in the kitchen.
  23. Stop by Amazearts for the free crafts and storytime at the studio. This preschool program is a great way to get out of the house, and it happens on two mornings in February.
  24. Plan a visit to Treehouse playground, where they have special visitors in costumes. In January, visitors were Superman and Ariel. If you’ve got a late-riser, you can save 50% by coming to the playground after 7.
  25. Check out one of the free family skate nights at Village Square Leisure Center. Come in out of the cold for a night of skating with your family. Bring your skates and helmets, however we have loaner skates and helmets available on a first come first served basis.
